BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced a strong 15-member squad for the upcoming <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-news/i-am-not-at-all-concerned-about-2-or-3-losses-india-has-very-good-graph-in-t20is-sourav-ganguly/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022 T20 World Cup</a> on Monday, September 12. India are currently ranked one on the ICC T20I Team Rankings but their record in the recent T20 World Cup tournaments has been disappointing. In 2021 (the last edition of the tournament), India failed to reach the knockout stages, after defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand.

The Men in Blue reached the finals of the 2014 edition and were favourites to win the 2016 edition as a host nation. Before entering the tournament (2016 T20 World Cup) India were riding on a seven-match winning streak. But their journey in the tournament ended with a big loss (seven wickets) against the West Indies in a semi-final clash.

With 273 runs in five matches, Virat Kohli finished as the second-highest run getter in the tournament (2016 T20 World Cup) but other India batters failed to even cross the 100-run mark. Bowlers also failed to create a substantial impact with no one taking more than five wickets.

Legendary skipper MS Dhoni led the strongest possible squad in the 2016 edition with the in-from Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Only five players from the 2016 edition are part of India's squad for the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The 2016 T20 World Cup was MS Dhoni's last ICC tournament as a captain of the Indian team. He was the second-highest run-scorer for India with 89 runs in five matches at an average of 89.00 as he remained unbeaten on four occasions and finished with a strike rate of 127.14.&nbsp;

The legendary wicket-keeper batter has retired from international cricket but is still active in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he leads Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The 41-year-old batter played all 14 matches during the IPL 2022 season and impressed with 232 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 123.40. He might draw curtains on his illustrious IPL career at the end of the 2023 season but fans will definitely wish to see him beyond that too.&nbsp;

The star Indian batter enjoyed his best T20I career during the 2016 calendar year and the 2016 T20 World Cup was no different. He was in beast mode during the entire tournament as he played some memorable knocks. He scored 273 runs in five matches at an average of 136.50 and a strike rate of 146.77. His best knock, 89* off 47 balls, came against the West Indies in the semi-final but it was not enough to guide India into the finals.

The 33-year-old missed considerable amount of international cricket after the conclusion of the IPL 2022 due to various reasons. But he made a great comeback during the 2022 Asia Cup with 276 runs in five matches, including a century against Afghanistan. He is back to his former best and will be a key player for India in the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup.&nbsp;

Former India Vice-Captain (Tests) made only one appearance in the 2016 T20 World Cup and that came in the semi-final clash against the West Indies. He scored 40 runs off 35 balls while opening the innings alongside Rohit Sharma and that was his last World Cup appearance for team India.

Rahane last played T20I cricket in August 2016 and ODI in 2018. He is currently trying to script a comeback in Test cricket and is on the verge of completing 5000 runs in the format. He ended India's winning drought at the Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground) in Tests and handed the team a historic 1-2 series win against the hosts Australia in 2020-21.

Rahane has scored over 8000 runs in international cricket but only 375 in 20 T20Is so far. He is unlikely to return to India's white-ball set-up since there are a lot of other players who are way ahead in the pecking order. Recently he smashed an unbeaten double ton while playing for West Zone in the ongoing 2022 Duleep Trophy and is <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-news/ajinkya-rahane-starts-fresh-with-unbeaten-double-century-in-the-duleep-trophy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">looking forward to regaining his place</a> in India's Test team.

The current India captain had a poor outing in the 2016 T20 World Cup despite having an impressive calendar year. Rohit scored only 88 runs despite playing all five matches at a poor average of 17.60 and a strike rate of 107.31. He scored 43 runs off 31 balls in the semi-final clash but overall it was a disappointing tournament for the opener.&nbsp;

Rohit has enjoyed quite a lot of success in white-ball cricket after the 2016 World Cup. He also made his return to red-ball cricket during the 2018-19 season and has been a crucial part of India's success in Test cricket. Rohit has also tasted great success as captain of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Rohit only scored 133 runs in the recently concluded 2022 Asia Cup as India failed to reach the finals. The 2022 T20 World Cup will be his first ICC tournament as a captain and he will look to make an impact with the bat and with his leadership skills.

The 36-year-old left-handed opener fared poorly in the 2016 T20 World Cup despite playing in the opening four matches. He was India's leading run-scorer during the 2015 ODI Word Cup and fans' expectations were very high from him leading into the 2016 T20 World Cup.

But Dhawan scored only 43 runs in four matches at an average of 10.75 and at a poor strike rate of 82.69 and as a result, Ajinkya Rahane replaced him in the semi-final clash against the West Indies.&nbsp;

Now it's more than 13 months since he last played T20I cricket for India but remains an integral part of the current ODI squad.&nbsp;

His latest international appearance came during India's three-match ODI tour to Zimbabwe in August 2022. He scored 154 runs in three matches but had a poor strike rate of 76.23. Dhawan was excellent in the IPL 2022 season with Punjab Kings where he scored 460 runs at a strike rate of 122.66 but it was not enough for him to make a comeback in the T20I set-up.

In the 2016 T20 World Cup, Suresh Raina's performance fairly underwhelming. He played all five matches but managed to score only 41 run at a poor average of 10.25 and a strike rate of 124.24.&nbsp;

Having lost his spot in the Test team in 2015, he struggled for consistency in white-ball cricket as well. Raina last played international cricket during India's tour of England in July 2018 and announced retirement from international cricket two years later. He remains the first Indian cricketer to score a hundred across all three formats and is hailed as one of the best Indian fielders of all time.

Raina continued to feature in the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings and completed 200 appearances during the 2021 season. He went unsold during the IPL 2022 mega auction and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/social-tracker-cricket/suresh-raina-announces-his-retirement-from-ipl-and-domestic-cricket/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced his retirement from IPL and domestic cricket</a> on September 6, 2022.

India's hero in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup had a forgettable 2016 World Cup. Yuvraj scored only 52 runs in four matches at an average of 13.00 and at a strike rate of 100.00.

The 40-year-old allrounder achieved everything he could in white-ball cricket but never really elevated his form after the 2016 World Cup. He was dropped from India's next white-ball series against the West Indies in August 2016 but made his return to the squad for the ODI series against England in January 2017.

He never made his comeback to international cricket after that and eventually announced his retirement in June 2019.

Yuvraj was released by Punjab Kings after IPL 2018 season and was purchased by Mumbai Indians for the 2019 season. He smashed a fifty on his debut for Mumbai Indians but was released at the end of the season.&nbsp;

The then 22-year-old allrounder failed to make an impact with both bat and ball during the 2016 T20 World Cup, his first major ICC tournament. Hardik scored 16 runs in two innings and took only five wickets in five innings, and also turned out to be pretty expensive with a poor economy rate of 10.21 in the event.&nbsp;

As far as Tests are concerned, he last played in the Southampton Test against England in 2018 but is India's key player in both the white-ball teams. He was handed captaincy duties during the two-match T20I series against Ireland in June 2022.

Hardik has played a crucial role in Mumbai Indians' success in the recent IPL seasons but was released after the 2021 edition. Gujarat Titans, new entrants, signed and named Hardik captain ahead of the 2022 season, where he guided the team to the title by scoring 487 runs and taking eight wickets.

Jadeja played all five matches and bowled 19 overs during the 2016 T20 World Cup in India. But similar to other bowlers, he also failed to make any impact with only four wickets at an economy rate of 7.15. He conceded 48 runs at an economy rate of 12.00 with no wickets in the crucial semi-final at Wankhede against the West Indies.

The 33-year-old allrounder has enjoyed a great run across all the three formats but arguably his best has come in red-ball cricket. He has taken 242 wickets in just 60 Test matches and has scored 2523 runs at a decent average of 36.56. Currently, he occupies the zenith in the ICC Test allrounders chart and remains the crucial part of India's red-ball and white-ball teams.

Jadeja injured himself during the 2022 Asia Cup tournament, which ruled him out of the 2022 T20 World Cup in October-November. Losing their key spin allrounder is a <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-news/massive-loss-mahela-jayawardene-on-ravindra-jadejas-absence-from-indias-t20-world-cup-squad/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">massive blow to India's title challenge</a> in the upcoming tournament.

It's a surprising name in this list and fans were also shocked when Pawan Negi was named in India's squad for the 2016 T20 World Cup. The then 23-year-old left-arm spinner was selected for both the 2016 Asia Cup and the 2016 T20 World Cup after his impressive performances in domestic cricket. He made his international debut against UAE in the Asia Cup but was benched throughout the 2016 World Cup.

His appearance against UAE in the 2016 Asia Cup also remains his only international appearance for India till now. Negi made headlines when Delhi Daredevils spent INR 8.5 crores during the 2016 IPL auction to sign him. But he was released by the Delhi franchise after a string of average performances and was later signed by <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/t20/ipl-indian-premier-league/rcb-royal-challengers-bangalore/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Royal Challengers Bangalore</a> (RCB) for the 2017 edition.

RCB retained Negi for the 2018 edition using their Right To Match (RTM) card for INR 1.0 crore but he failed to make any big impact. He last featured in IPL during the 2021 edition for Kolkata Knight Riders but was not able make any appearances. Negi last played competitive cricket for Delhi in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he failed to take any wickets in all three matches that he featured in.&nbsp;

Ashwin had a dream year in the form of 2016 for which he earned the prestigious ICC Cricketer of the Year award - only the third Indian cricketer after Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar to bag the feat. But his performances in the 2016 T20 World Cup were not up to the expectations. He took four wickets in five matches at an economy rate of 7.66 and bowled only two overs in the semi-final.

The bowling allrounder dominated red-ball cricket post the 2016 T20 World Cup. He took 27 wickets in just three Test matches, including a career-best seven for 59 in an innings, during New Zealand's tour of India in 2016. He continued that form in 2017 and was placed in the World Test XI of that year by the ICC.

In October 2019, while playing in his 66th Test match, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-news/ravi-ashwin-is-one-of-those-who-are-very-adaptable-daniel-vettori/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ashwin</a> became the joint-fastest bowler, alongside Muttiah Muralitharan, to take 350 Test wickets.

The veteran spinner was included in both the 2016 Asia Cup and World Cup squad as a third-choice spin option behind Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. He made one appearance against UAE in Asia Cup but was made to occupy the bench throughout the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Harbhajan was dropped from the next year's Champions Trophy squad in England due to the form factor. Later he bashed the BCCI for unfair treatment and never made a comeback to the national team. He announced his retirement from all forms of competitive cricket in December 2021.

Harbhajan featured in his last IPL during 2021 edition where he played three matches for Kolkata Knight Riders. The experienced right-arm pacer has been named in the reserves for the 2022 T20 World Cup. Shami didn't feature in the 2016 Asia Cup. He was one of three pace specialists alongside Bumrah and Nehra but failed to make any appearance in the 2016 T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya played all five matches as a third pace option, leaving Shami on the bench for the entire tournament.
