The inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup took place in 2007. At that time, the teams were new to the 20-over format and the skill sets required to excel in it were not evident. It has been fifteen years since the T20 carnival began and six-hitting has been found to be an integral part in the success of the teams.

Six-hitting is an art. It requires effort and concentration. Many teams have unearthed some gems who have aced the art of clearing the ropes. One has witnessed many legends of the game such as Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and Shane Watson put up an exhibition of smashing maximums at the grandest stage of them all. The mantle seems to have taken over by modern-day T20 superstars like Jos Buttler, David Miller, and Glenn Maxwell.

Let us look at the top five teams who have smashed the most sixes in the marquee tournament:

5. Sri Lanka - 172 sixes

Sri Lanka have struck 172 sixes in the history of the tournament. The Lankan Lions might not contain numerous power hitters like West Indies but have many sweet timers of the ball. This has been the secret to their six-hitting prowess.

Mahela Jayawardene has struck the most sixes for his side with 25 to his name followed by Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 20 maximums. Among the cricketers who are featuring in the ongoing T20 extravaganza, Charith Asalanka has cleared the ropes the most number of times (9).

Sri Lanka have played amazing cricket in the marquee tournament. They were the champions of the fifth edition which was conducted in 2014 and have been the runners-up on two occasions. However, the Lions have missed out on the semi-final spot in the last two times, and Dasun Shanka & Co. will look to put on an improved show this time around.
