To come here to India, probably the toughest place for a batter, to start the series like this, to do it in a winning cause, heads and shoulders above the other four (hundreds). I got a bit luckier in the second innings. I played and missed a few. First up, I was at peace with getting out caught at slip like I did in the first. I was focused on covering the inside edge. I knew that was the real danger ball. I maintained that mindset and really wanted to be positive with my sweep and reverse sweep. I have changed my technique slightly for this series specifically. I had a shoulder surgery, so I had a long time to prepare for this series. Made some adjustments, worked hard on my game. The family have had early starts throughout the week, they can finally get some sleep, will be nice catching up with them," said Ollie Pope at the post match presentation.

"Since I have taken the captaincy on, we have had a lot of fantastic moments as a team. We've got a lot of great victories, we've been part of some amazing games. Where we are and who were playing against, this victory is probably, 100% definitely, our greatest triumph. It's my first time coming out here being a captain. I am a great observer of the game. I learned a lot from our first innings in the field. I watched how Indian spinners operated, how Rohit set the field and tried to take a lot of that into our innings. Absolutely thrilled for everyone. Tom Hartley on debut getting nine wickets, Ollie Pope coming back after his shoulder surgery, incredible effort from everyone. Tom came into the squad for the first time. A lot of confidence given to him. I was willing to give him longer spells regardless of what happened because I knew I had to turn back to him at some point. We completely back people who we have been selected. I have been lucky enough to play a lot of Test matches in the subcontinent. Same Joe Root, I have seen some pretty special innings from him. But the situation we found ourselves in, coming in at No. 3, the shots he played, 190 on such a difficult wicket, he was able to manipulate the field with sweep shots and reverse-sweeps, the way he was able to rotate the strike, I think that's the greatest innings that's ever been played in subcontinent by an English batsman. If you lose, you wake up in the morning, you're still having a good crack at life, still breathing, got another four games after this. I don't fear failure, all I want to do is try and encourage whoever finds themselves lucky enough to be in this squad," said Ben Stokes at the post-match presentation.

"Cricket is played over four days, so it's hard to pinpoint where it went wrong. Having got a lead of 190, we thought we were very much in the game. Exceptional batting, one of the best that I have seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter, Ollie Pope played a brilliant knock. I thought 230 was gettable, there wasn't too much in the pitch. We didn't bat well enough to get to the score. I went and checked where we bowled, we bowled in the right areas.When you finish the day, you analyse what went well and what didn't go well. The bowlers executed the plans really well, but you got to take your hat off and say well played to Pope. That was some serious knock. Hard to look at one or two things. Overall, we failed as a team. After the first innings of their batting and our batting, I thought we were very much in the game. We didn't bat well enough to get to that score. I wanted them (Siraj and Bumrah) to take the game to the fifth day. 20-30 runs, anything is possible. The lower order actually fought really well there and showed the top-order that you need to fight it out. You need to show character, you need to be brave enough, which I thought we weren't. We wanted to take some chances, we didn't take chances with the bat. But that can happen. It's the first game of the series, I hope the guys can learn from that," said Rohit Sharma at the post-match presentation.

Things are even stevens at stumps on Day 3 as England have got something to play with in the fourth innings and can extend it further on Day 4. Ollie Pope tries to reverse sweep Ravindra Jadeja but Patel fails to grab it at point

Ollie Pope completed his 5th Test hundred to keep England in the game and frustrate India as England extend their lead to 58 with five wickets in hand.

Ravichandran Ashwin got rid of Ben Stokes for 11th time in his Test career with another beauty.

Jadeja cleaned up Jonny Bairstow who left a straight delivery which crashed into his stumps getting dismissed for 10.

After good opening, Duckett conitnued his innings and went on to score 47 (52) adding 68 runs for the second wicket. He was finally cleaned up by Jasprit Bumrah after a lucky lbw call.

England openers Zak Crawley (31 off 33) and Ben Duckett got off to a good start adding 45 runs for the first wicket before Ashwin got rid of Crawley.

Joe Root cleaned up India's tail with his 4-fer as Ravindra Jadeja missed out on his 100 getting dismissed for 87.

England are leading by 45 runs on Day 3. They're 235/5 after 59 overs with Ollie Pope 96* and Ben Foakes 25* at the crease.

At Stumps on Day 2, India are at 421/7, having a huge 175-run lead with three wickets in hand. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 81, while Axar Patel was not out on 35. They have already added 63 runs and will look to stretch India's lead further on Day 3 before having a crack at England in the second innings.

All-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have managed to take India beyond the 400-run mark. England's shoulders will start to drop now as the lead is slowly getting out of hand.

India's deep batting is helping them extend their first-innings lead against England. After a couple of quick wickets, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have already added 38 runs for the eighth wicket and taken India's lead to 150. England would be desperate to break this partnership before Stumps.

England bag two wickets in quick succession after the solid partnership between KS Bharat and Ravindra Jadeja. After the former's dismissal, Ravichandran Ashwin walked out to bat at No. 8. His innings was cut short due to an awful mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.

Ashwin hit a delivery to the right of cover and started running. Jadeja took a couple of steps before deciding not to go for the run. Both batters were stuck at the non-striker's end when the combination of Tom Hartley and Ben Foakes completed the formalities on the opposite side. Ashwin had to depart for just 1 off 11 deliveries.

England finally managed to break the sixth-wicket partnership as Joe Root gets KS Bharat LBW. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter struggled in the initial phase of his innings but was just starting to look more confident. He slog-swept Root for a boundary off the first ball of the 89th over and attempted to play that shot of the next ball as well. However, this time the ball kept low and slipped under his bat to catch him in front of the stumps. Bharat reviewed the on-field decision, which was later upheld. India retained the review as replays showed that it was Umpire's Call on hitting. The 30-year-old departed for 41 off 81 deliveries.

India have clearly taken the driver's seat, as the lead is now in three figures, and they've two really good batters batting at the moment, with at least two more to go. They're in for something huge here. Should be an interesting watch on how Indians fare in the last hour or so of play remaining, before Stumps are taken on Day 2.

A brilliant half-century for Ravindra Jadeja. His first after a long time in Test cricket. Took his own merry time to get that last run, but what a knock it has been! Cherry on top, that iconic sword celebration is put on display for the crowd at Uppal, and they are loving it, aren't they?

The southpaw came out to bat when India lost the wicket of Shreyas Iyer, and the ball was turning a lot. Counterattacking the spinners, he went all guns blazing, and hit the ball across the field, to bring up his fifty in such a quick time. Despite that big six hitting initially, he knows he has a big role to play, and that is the reason he has slowed down a bit, where he's not trying to score runs hastily. His partnership with KS Bharat is also growing slowly and steadily. Credits to Bharat also, who started quite slow, but that one over from Rehan Ahmed saw him unleash some good hitting to get runs under his belt.

The game resumes for the last session of the second day. Joe Root will roll the arm to open the proceedings.

India had another solid session in the Test match, as they scored 87 runs in 26 overs for the loss of two wickets. Both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul tried to take the aerial route and were caught at mid-wicket. Ravindra Jadeja has looked confident during his knock of 45 not out off 68 balls. KS Bharat has looked uncomfortable at times and has survived a couple of close calls. However, he has managed to battle it out thus far. India lead by 63 runs with five wickets in hand. They will want to extend the lead as much as they can because they have to bat last.

After KL Rahul's dismissal, KS Bharat and Ravindra Jadeja have played cautiously and helped India get past 300 and extend the lead beyond 50. India will hope that this pair can take them to Tea.

KL Rahul's near-flawless innings came to an unfortunate end when he hit a long hop from Tom Hartley straight to Rehan Ahmed at deep mid-wicket. The Karnataka batter scored 86 runs off 123 deliveries, hitting eight fours and two sixes. He would be gutted with the way he got out as he had a century for the taking.

Ravindra Jadeja put out a big stride and attempted to defend a ball from Jack Leach. The left-arm spinner got the ball to turn and bounce back in towards Jadeja. The ball ricocheted off Jadeja's front pad and went straight to forward short leg.

Chris Gaffaney reckoned that there was an inside edge and raised his finger. Jadeja immediately called for a review. The decision was overturned after the third umpire saw no spike on the UltraEdge as the ball went past the bat. This turned out to be the first successful review in the match thus far.

KL Rahul hit a couple of gigantic sixes off Rehan Ahmed in the 57th over. The second maximum helped India surpass England's first-innings score of 246. Rahul has moved into the 70s and will have the magical three-figure mark on his mind.

Shreyas Iyer battled it out in the initial phase of his innings and was looking settled at the crease. However, he tried to hit Rehan Ahmed for a six and holed out to Tom Hartley at deep mid-wicket. Iyer's 35-run knock comprised three fours and a solitary six. He would be disappointed at not being able to convert his start into a big score.

India had a fine first session on Day 2 as they put on 103 runs in 27 overs for the loss of two wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal departed for 80 in the first over of the day, which was bowled by Joe Root. Shubman Gill was the other batter to be dismissed in the first session, as he dragged a flighted delivery from Tom Hartley straight to Ben Duckett at mid-wicket. India are 222/3 at Lunch on Day 2 and are trailing England's first-innings total by just 22 runs. It seems that the hosts are set to take a substantial lead in the first innings.

KL Rahul brought up his 14th Test half-century, in his 50th game, with a single off Joe Root in the last ball of the 48th over. This has been a fluent knock from the Karnataka batter. He reached the milestone in just 72 deliveries, hitting six fours during his stay at the crease. India will hope Rahul goes on to convert this into a three-figure score.

As soon as Shreyas Iyer walked out to the middle after the fall of Shubman Gill's wicket, Ben Stokes went to Mark Wood, his only pace option in the game. Iyer's history with short-pitch bowling is well-documented and England have done their homework. The right-arm seamer has been bowling fast and has caused Iyer some problems. However, the Mumbai batter is battling it out, showing commendable doggedness.

Shubman Gill's wretched run in Test cricket continues, as the Punjab batter becomes Tom Hartley's first wicket in international cricket. The left-arm spinner floated it up and Gill tried to hit it against the turn. However, he didn't get to the pitch of the ball and all he managed to do was drag it straight to Ben Duckett at mid-wicket.

Joe Root could have had two wickets in the over. Two balls after dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal, Root got one to leave KL Rahul and the ball took the edge of his bat but Ben Foakes couldn't hold on to the catch. The ball ricocheted off the wicketkeeper's right glove and went over first slip. Well, the umpire deemed it as byes, so, he reckoned that there was no bat involved. UltraEdge showed a spike but England does not have any review left and they wouldn't have been able to challenge the on-field call had Foakes taken the catch.

Joe Root gets England off to an ideal start, as he takes the big wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal on the fourth ball of the day. Bowling from round the wicket, Root tosses one up and the southpaw hits an uppish drive straight back at the former England captain, who latches on to the catch with both hands.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are giving England a taste of their own medicine. They've brought up a 50-run stand off just 39 deliveries. India are 51/0 after seven overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal 35* (32) and Rohit Sharma 13* (10).

A fan jumped into the play field to touch Rohit Sharma's feet before the start of the Indian innings. According to posts surfacing on social media, people are claiming that he was wearing Virat Kohli's jersey. The love for the Indian batting superstars is on another level throughout the country.

Ravindra Jadeja appealed hard for a possible LBW against Joe Root. The umpire gave not out but Rohit calls for DRS but it went to vain as the ball hit the bat first. Root survives!

"We would have batted as well. Looks dry. Whether we bowl or bat first, we have the skills and we got the guys to do the job. A good series, I am playing for the first time a five-match series. We have played in these conditions before. We know what to do, it's all about executing your skills. We've got three spinners and two seamers. It was a tough one (to leave Kuldeep Yadav) Axar has done well and bats really well in these conditions. Probably the reason we went with Axar," Rohit said.

"We are gonna have a bat. It's typical conditions in India. The preparation has been really good. We know the challenge, India is a successful side. We have Hartley making his debut, Rehan has played only one side, but they have a good leader in Leach. Woody is that X-factor bowler," Stokes said.
