AB de Villiers is one of the finest overseas players to have played in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the coveted title eluded him. The right-handed batter is a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend, having spent 11 seasons and amassing close to 5000 runs at a strike rate of 158.63.
The former South African cricketer has played alongside and against some of the greatest to have featured in the IPL. On the sidelines of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025, de Villiers named his all-time IPL XI, which featured some interesting picks.
De Villiers named Rohit Sharma and Matthew Hayden as his openers, while his long-time friend Virat Kohli slots in at No. 3. Current Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav takes the No. 4 spot, right ahead of de Villiers himself. Hardik Pandya is the sole all-rounder in the side, batting at No. 6.
De Villiers picked the inspirational MS Dhoni as his wicketkeeper and captain. The 44-year-old will bat at No. 7 in de Villiers' lineup. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga will form the pace duo. They formed a formidable pair during their time together at the Mumbai Indians. Yuzvendra Chahal, the all-time leading wicket-taker in the league's history, is the only Indian spinner in the setup. He will be partnering with current Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori.
De Villiers' lineup is a fine blend of legends of yesteryears like Hayden, Malinga, and Vettori, while current superstars like Kohli, Suryakumar, and Bumrah also find themselves included.
