Team India’s decision to back Ravichandran Ashwin over Yuzvendra Chahal in the T20 World Cup 2022 couldn’t bear fruits as the off-spinner managed to pick only six wickets in six matches. Chahal, who has already proved his mettle for India in the white-ball format, couldn't break into the squad even for one game as India lost to England by 10 wickets in the semi-final and were knocked out of the tournament.

Dinesh Karthik, who was part of the squad believes that the coach and the captain backed a certain player because of a set belief. However, the wicketkeeper-batter also mentioned that Ashwin started the tournament well but couldn’t capitalise on the form, while he believes that Chahal could have done more damage if he was given an opportunity.

“These are all calls that are taken by the captain and coach with the belief they had in a certain player. To be fair, Ashwin started the tournament well but probably didn't end well. But Chahal would've definitely made a lot more damage, it could've been an interesting choice. But hindsight is a very interesting thing to look at once the results come out,” said Karthik while talking to Cricbuzz.

We expect a lot better from Team India: Karthik

It’s been almost a decade since Team India managed to win any of the major trophies in men’s cricket. The team management has tried multiple new formulas but nothing really worked for them. As things stand, BCCI has shortlisted 20 players for the upcoming ODI World Cup but the disappointment of not qualifying for the finals of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup still haunts the fans and the players. Karthik had his say in the matter, and opined that he expects a lot better from Team India.

“All in all, if we look at the overall picture of the World Cup and Asia Cup, we expect a lot of better from Team India and that's the right way to put it,” the cricketer added.
