Heading into the three-match ODI series between India and Australia, all eyes were on the talismanic duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as they were making a comeback to international cricket after seven months. However, they had a forgettable outing in the first ODI in Perth, registering scores of 8 and 0, respectively.
The second ODI was held at the iconic Adelaide Oval on Thursday, October 23. Kohli was once again dismissed for a duck, but Rohit showed great application at the crease on a difficult track against in-form Australian pacers and scored a gritty 73 off 97 balls, belting seven fours and two sixes. He top-scored for the tourists and forged a brilliant 118-run stand off 136 deliveries with Shreyas Iyer to help the Men in Blue post a competitive 264/9 in 50 overs after being asked to bat first by Mitchell Marsh.
After Rohit's fighting knock, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif lauded him for holding his own in adverse batting conditions. The cricketer-turned-expert said that it was a very important innings for India and for Rohit as well.
"Too much social media chatter about his future, tough pitch, world class pacers operating, Gill and Kohli out cheaply... Despite all that Rohit plays a very important inning for India and his career. This 73 at Adelaide will give him a lot of confidence. Rohit shows he isn’t’ going anywhere," Kaif wrote on his official 'X' (formerly Twitter) handle.

Rohit and Shreyas' half-centuries eventually went in vain as India lost the match by two wickets. Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly scored fluent half-centuries to take Australia over the line in 46.2 overs, giving the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
