Batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to make their international returns as part of India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad on Saturday (October 4), with both batters to play an international game after nearly eight months.
The ODI series will begin on October 19 in Perth, followed by matches in Adelaide (October 23) and Sydney (October 25). It will be the first time Rohit and Kohli take the field for India since the Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, where the Men in Blue lifted the silverware after defeating New Zealand in the final. Neither of the players has played a competitive game since the end of IPL 2025 in June.
Notably, the duo will only feature in ODI cricket as they retired from T20Is after guiding India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and announced their shock retirements from Test cricket earlier this May. Rohit, who captained the Test team, stepped away just before India’s England tour, while Kohli exited a week later, only 770 runs short of the 10,000-run milestone in Tests. Both players are expected to continue playing in this format until at least the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Gill to make his debut as ODI captain
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit ahead of the upcoming three-match series against Australia starting October 19 in Perth. The 26-year-old, who already captains the Test team and serves as vice-captain in T20Is, now takes over the one-day setup as India begins its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The decision to hand over the reins to Gill was taken during a selection committee meeting in Ahmedabad, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The selectors reportedly wanted Gill to settle into the leadership role well ahead of the next World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. With this move, Gill becomes India’s 28th ODI captain.
Gill, earlier this year, succeeded Rohit as India’s Test captain following the latter's retirement from the longest format. In his maiden assignment as skipper, Gill impressed with both bat and leadership, guiding India to a 2-2 draw in England while finishing as the series’ highest run-scorer with 754 runs.
Apart from Rohit and Kohli, the selectors have largely retained the core group from the Champions Trophy squad. Shubman Gill, India’s all-format batter, could be rotated considering workload, which may open the door for Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top. Shreyas Iyer, India’s highest scorer in the Champions Trophy, has been named the vice-captain, with KL Rahul expected to don the gloves as first-choice wicketkeeper. Dhruv Jurel has been picked as the backup wicketkeeper.
The all-rounder department sees no Ravindra Jadeja, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar make a return, though Hardik Pandya continues to miss out due to a quadriceps injury. Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has impressed with his dual skills, is set for an ODI debut. In the pace department, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested, leaving Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna as the seam attack. Kuldeep Yadav leads the spin unit, with Varun Chakravarthy’s inclusion providing variety.
Meanwhile, the selection committee has also announced the squad for the five T20Is, which will be played just after the three ODIs. Suryakumar Yadav, who recently led the team to a victorious Asia Cup 2025 campaign, has been named the captain. The 15-member squad is largely similar which travelled to Dubai for the Asia Cup. However, Bumrah has been named in the T20I team. Meanwhile, with Hardik out, the team has brought Nitish Kumar Reddy and Sundar into the mix.
