AUS vs SA 2025: Prenelan Subrayen reported for suspect bowling action on ODI debut

Prenelan Subrayen will undergo an independent assessment of his bowling action at an ICC-accredited facility after his action raised concerns over its legality. Match officials have raised objections in his action after the first ODI of the three-match series between Australia and South Africa, which was held at the Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder completed his 10-over quota on ODI debut. He finished his spell with figures of 1/46 including the critical wicket of Travis Head (27 off 24). The left-handed top-order batter was the first wicket to fall for the hosts.

Corbin Bosch and Senuran Muthuswamy, both of whom were involved in the preceding 20-over series, will be the most likely candidates to take the right-arm spinner's place in case he doesn't feature in the remainder of the series.

He had only recently stepped on the stage of international cricket. Subrayen picked up a four-wicket haul (4/42 in 10 overs) against Zimbabwe in the same Test in which Wiaan Mulder had amassed a mammoth triple-century in Bulawayo. Following an impressive form with the ball, the right-arm spinner was awarded a place in the ODI squad as well, and debuted on Tuesday.

South Africa registered a 98-run win against Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series in Cairns. Keshav Maharaj chipped in with the bat (13 off 12) before putting in a career-best performance (5/33 in 10 overs) to help his time claim the lead. This was also the biggest win by runs for South Africa against Australia in ODIs in Australia.

The Proteas put up 296/8 in 50 overs after being sent in to bat first. Aiden Markram (82 off 81), Temba Bavuma (65 off 74) and Matthew Breetzke (57 off 56) were the three half-centurions. Travis Head (4/57 in nine overs) was surprisingly the standout bowlers for the Mitchell Marsh-led team.

Marsh was the only one from the home team who contributed substantially (88 off 96) during the run-chase. Ben Dwarshuis (33 off 52) was the only other batter with a 30-plus score (33 off 52) in a forgettable outing for the Aussies. The second game will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Friday, August 22, as the hosts will look to keep the series alive with a win.
