Australia announce squad for T20 World Cup 2024, Mitchell Marsh to lead

Cricket Australia (CA) took centre stage and announced their 15-man squad that will be travelling to the West Indies and the USA for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to begin on June 2. It was revealed that star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be leading the side, with the likes of Pat Cummins, Tim David, David Warner, Josh Hazlewood, and many more stars featuring as well. 

However, in a major development, veteran batter Steve Smith has been left out of the provisional 15-man squad for the tournament. Furthermore, exciting young talent Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has been performing exceptionally well in the IPL, has also missed out. 

The board opted for a second specialist spinner in Ashton Agar and a spare all-rounder in Cameron Green, as both players will allow for more flexibility from the side. 

With Fraser-McGurk’s exclusion from the squad being a shock to many, Steve Smith missing out was something that was expected.

Given the responsibility to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup, Marsh came forward to talk about how big of an honour it is for him to play for his country. He extended his thanks to the board, and expressed his gratitude towards the group of player who will be travelling to the West Indies and the USA for the tournament. 

"It's been an immense privilege to play for my country and now an even greater honour to lead the squad to a World Cup. I am extremely grateful to have such a good group of people in our players and staff. We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue in what looks like a wide-open tournament,” Marsh was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
