BBL 2025-26: ‘He is a world-class player’ - Josh Philippe defends Babar Azam amid lean patch

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has thrown his support behind former Pakistan captain Babar Azam, expressing confidence that the star batter will rediscover his best form ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which is set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Babar has endured a lean patch in the shortest format, raising concerns about his readiness for the marquee tournament.

Since the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, Babar has managed only two half-centuries in T20 cricket. In eight innings during this period, the top-order batter has scored 206 runs at an average of 34.33, but his strike rate of 114.44 has been a major point of criticism.

The prolonged dip has also been reflected in the ICC Men’s T20I Batters Rankings, where Babar has slipped to 31st place, a significant drop for a player of his stature. With less than two months remaining before the global event, the timing of the slump is far from ideal.

Currently featuring for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26, Babar has yet to make an impact in Australian conditions as well. He has registered scores of just two and nine in his first two appearances for the franchise. However, Philippe, who shares the dressing room with Babar at the BBL, believes the Pakistan batter’s class will eventually shine through.

“He is a world-class player. It is probably challenging coming to Australia and these bouncy surfaces. But a couple of games under the belt, a few more sessions, he will be absolutely fine. His record is outstanding. I have no doubt he will be in the runs next game,” said Philippe as quoted by ICC.

Wicketkeeper-batter Philippe is also eyeing a return to Australia’s national setup as he looks to strengthen his case for selection in the T20 World Cup squad. The 28-year-old was in impressive touch during the white-ball series against India at home in October and November, and he has carried that momentum into the ongoing BBL with a strong start to the season. Currently batting at No. 3 for the Sydney Sixers, Philippe has expressed his willingness to continue in that role, allowing Babar the opportunity to regain form at the top of the order.

“I am happy to play whatever role is required. I am looking forward to hopefully putting on a significant partnership with (Babar) and learning from him out in the middle. He is a really nice guy and we are certainly enjoying having him around, “ said Philippe.
