Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently active only in the One-Day International (ODI) format. Both veterans retired from T20 Internationals after leading India to a historic triumph in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup held in the USA and the West Indies. Earlier this year, in May, they also announced their retirement from Test cricket, just ahead of the squad announcement for the England tour.

Their last appearance in the Indian jersey came during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where India lifted the title for the third time by defeating New Zealand in the final in Dubai. With both players now limited to ODIs, there is growing uncertainty about when fans will next see them in action for the national team.

The next ODI World Cup is scheduled for 2027, and by then, both players will be nearing 40. Interestingly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was surprised by their decision to extend their ODI careers. It was widely expected that they would retire after the Champions Trophy win. However, Rohit, during the post-match press conference, confirmed his intention to continue playing ODIs. According to reports, the BCCI is planning to hold discussions with the duo soon regarding their future plans.

"Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time", a BCCI source said as quoted by The Week.

Since their retirements from the longer format came somewhat unexpectedly and did not appear to be part of a long-term plan, it remains to be seen whether Rohit and Kohli will be given a formal farewell in ODIs. According to a BCCI source, one of the main concerns is the lengthy gaps in their competitive cricket schedule, given that they now feature only in the 50-over format.

Neither player has participated in any competitive ODI matches since the Champions Trophy final. As a result, the board is reportedly considering asking them to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year to ensure they maintain match fitness and form.

"Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don't think nobody's going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that,” the BCCI source added.
