India's right-arm off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin celebrated fellow teammate Mohammed Shami's dismissal of Nathan Lyon in one of the most bizarre, yet hilarious manners, which shocked Shami and left everyone watching in splits.
The second Test of the ongoing all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 has commenced from February 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Australia look desperate to try and turn things around, being already 0-1 behind India and the race to the finals of the World Test Championship heating up.
The incident happened when Australia were batting with the 75th over running, and Mohammed Shami was bowling to Nathan Lyon, who were eight down with 246 runs on the board. Shami ran in to deliver and he delivered the ball, which was a fuller delivery, and with a hint of shape.
The ball was delivered with such perfection that Lyon failed to read and react in time, due to which the ball missed his defence and went straight to dislodge both the off and middle stumps. Lyon turned out to be Shami's third victim in the innings.
As the usual norm, with Lyon's dismissal, all the Indian players ran along to gather around Shami and congratulated him. Ravichandran Ashwin casually walked from behind and twisted both of Shami's ears. Shami was totally taken aback, while the veteran spinner laughed and enjoyed the moment.
The incident left everyone in splits, with even legend Sunil Gavaskar from the commentary box not being able to contain his excitement and commenting on the camaraderie between Ashwin and Shami. Gavaskar went on to state that probably Ashwin was planning another unique delivery to try and execute against Australia.
“I think if you ask Ashwin a bit later he would say that he was practicing another kind of delivery,” the 70-year-old remarked.
