Former Sri Lanka cricketer and former Sri Lanka head coach Chandika Hathurusingha is all set to be apppointed as Bangladesh head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team. An official update, however, is yet to come from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Currently, Chandika Hathurusingha working as the assistant coach of the New South Wales cricket team in Australia's domestic circuit. Cricket New South Wales has also released an official statement that Hathurusingha has decided to discontinue with them.

Chandika Hathurusingha has already worked with Bangladesh

It is to be noted that the 54-year-old will be "returning" to Bangladesh, because he has already worked with the team for three years from 2014 to 2017. Earlier, on January 30, 2023 , BCB President Nazmul Hassan had released a statement that the new head coach - to replace Russell Domingo - would be appointed between February 18 and 20. Though no name has been given, it is to be presumed that Hathurasingha would be brought back into the role according to ESPNCricinfo.

"The coach will come. I don't know if it is Hathuru or someone else, neither has the BCB announced it, but you will see. He will definitely be in place before the England series [starting March 1]. I won't say who it will be. He will be here by February 18-20," Hassan had said.

Meanwhile, NSW's head of male cricket Michael Klinger thanked Chandika Hathurusingha for his contribution to the team during his stint. However, the team didn't perform as expected as they are at the bottom of the table in both Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup.

"Chandi has made a wonderful contribution to Cricket NSW, the Blues and Sydney Thunder over the last couple of years and we are sad to see him go. But with that in mind, we totally understand his desire to seek a coaching role internationally and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his coaching career," Klinger said.
