Former India cricketer Kirti Azad has triggered a debate on social media after expressing his displeasure over condom advertisements being aired during the live telecast of the second T20I between India and England at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on July 04.

The former cricketer took to X (formerly Twitter) during the match, questioning whether such advertisements were suitable to be broadcast during a sporting event watched by families and children. Azad also tagged the BCCI in his post while raising the issue.

"Children are watching live the international T20 match between India versus England being played at Old Trafford. Isn't it a shame that an adult advertisement of Durex comes on the screen,” he wrote.

His post soon went viral, with fans expressing contrasting opinions on the matter.

Fans divided over Kirti Azad's remarks

A section of social media users backed Azad's viewpoint, arguing that cricket is a family sport and such advertisements can create awkward moments for viewers watching matches with children.

One user wrote:

"Very true sir. I also felt ashamed about it and left watching it."Another commented:"Even as an adult it felt awkward watching those ads with my parents."

However, many others disagreed with the former Indian all-rounder, asserting that condom advertisements promote awareness about safe sex and responsible contraception rather than explicit content.

Responding to Azad's post, one user wrote:

"On the contrary, Mister Azad, given the population explosion, this is far more important than anything else. Educate kids. A playground is a great platform to raise awareness."

Another added:

"Why is it shameful? Give me one reason. It's actually a good way to teach control and safety. Condoms are important in today's world. People need to be made aware."

Meanwhile, hosts England beat India comprehensively in the second T20I of the five-match series to take a 1-0 lead. Jacob Bethell was named Player of the Match for his outstanding unbeaten knock of 76 off just 46 balls. The third match will be played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on July 07.
