CPL 2025: David Wiese named St Lucia Kings' captain

David Wiese has been named as the skipper of defending champions St Lucia Kings for the 2025 edition of the Caribbean Premier League. They are without their full-time skipper, Faf du Plessis. Notably, the ace South African batter had backed out of the CPL due to personal reasons, but was later ruled out from the competition as well as The Hundred 2025 to undergo a groin surgery.   

Wiese expressed his excitement to be provided with the opportunity of leading the team and looked forward for the season to get started. Head coach Darren Sammy commented on Wiese's time in the Kings' setup and urged the supporters to come out in numbers for their opening home game of the season.

“I am absolutely humbled to be named your captain. This season, we will be playing with passion, heart, and unity. You will see us give everything for each other and for you. And fans, we need you with us to pack the stadiums, lift the vibe and let's paint Saint Lucia blue. Let's make this a special season,” stated Wiese, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“David Wiese has been a part of the family for a long time. He has been with us for a number of years and has put on some excellent performances. We cannot wait to start our first home game on 23rd August. We know Saint Lucia Kings are the best fans and you will come out at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and paint it blue, as you support our new captain and our team,” Sammy expressed on Wiese.

The former Namibian all-rounder has played a total of 26 matches for St Lucia Kings across 2021, 2023 and 2024. He did not represent the team in CPL's 2022 edition, since he had been picked at the mega auction of the Indian Premier League by Kolkata Knight Riders. The star cricketer was a critical component of the team in their title-winning run in 2024; striking at 168.05 while scoring 121 runs in seven innings and picking up 13 wickets in 10 innings.

Wiese represented Namibia till his international retirement in 2024 after donning the Proteas' jersey from 2013 to 2016. This makes him the first player from an Associate nation to be a full-time skipper at a franchise tournament being run by a Test-playing country.
