CPL 2025: Jason Holder named captain of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots

West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder has been named the skipper of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for the upcoming 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which begins on August 15. This move marks a significant change as Holder ends his 13-year association with the Barbados Royals, the franchise he joined in the CPL’s inaugural season in 2013.

Holder leaves the Barbados Royals with an impressive record, with 1169 runs and 97 wickets in 104 matches. He also led the team to two CPL titles (in 2014 and 2019), captaining the team during the latter victory. Known for his calm and composed leadership on the field, Holder's arrival is seen as a fresh start for the Patriots, who struggled during the previous season, managing just a single win in 10 matches. With Holder taking charge, the franchise will hope to rebuild around his experience and leadership qualities.

The squad also features emerging talent Alick Athanaze, who has so far played only for the Barbados Royals in 2023 and 2024. Athanaze, who made his international debut in 2023, has played 19 CPL matches, scoring 344 runs at an average of 22.93 and a strike rate of 106.83, including one half-century.

Sherfane Rutherford will be turning out for his third CPL franchise this season. Rutherford has represented the Patriots for the last four seasons and previously played for Guyana Amazon Warriors from 2018 to 2020.

Their batting lineup also boasts firepower from established players like Evin Lewis, Kyle Mayers, and Rilee Rossouw, who remain integral to the team’s plans.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will kick off their 2025 campaign against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at Warner Park, Basseterre. Meanwhile, the St Lucia Kings enter the tournament as the defending champions. Holder’s presence in the middle order and seam attack is expected to add much-needed balance and tactical stability as the Patriots aim to turn their fortunes around.
