The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has been treating the fans with breathtaking cricketing action in the tournament so far. However, it has also been embroiled in controversy due to the sale of tickets. Notably, an FIR was registered by a fan in Kolkata ahead of the India vs South Africa clash at Eden Gardens, alleging that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and ticketing partner BookMyShow have hoarded tickets for sale in the black market.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, Kolkata Police has issued a notice to the BCCI President Roger Binny asking for information on ticket sales for the event. According to the notice issued, Binny has been asked to submit documents to the officer of the Maidan police station investigating the complaints regarding black marketing of the tickets.

“A notice was sent to the BCCI president, asking him to provide relevant documents and information regarding the sale of tickets either personally or through any competent person of his organisation to the investigating officer of Maidan PS during working hours on Tuesday," an officer was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

The Kolkata Police has so far arrested 19 people and seized 108 tickets and also registered seven cases in the matter so far. Notably, the ticket booking process for the World Cup has been widely criticised by fans all over India who’ve been made to wait for long hours in the virtual queue and still haven't been able to book.

Tickets for knockouts to be released soon

There have been several reports claiming that only a handful of tickets were made available for the fans at various venues and the rest were not released at all. After numerous controversies came to light, the BCCI released around 4 lakh more tickets for fans after the initial sales.
