The Delhi Capitals have had a plethora of talented players over the years, but the Delhi-based franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL) are yet to win a title. However, they would hope that they could strike gold in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League.
DC has a reputation for giving opportunities to Indian cricket's rising stars. They have picked up every Indian U19 World Cup winning captain until now, except one. Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli was the one Indian U19 captain who won the U19 World Cup but was not picked up by the Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils then) in the inaugural season of the IPL.
Things could have been very different for DC if Kohli had been selected in their squad back in 2008. They roped in Unmukt Chand back in 2012, Prithvi Shaw in 2018, Yaah Dhull in 2022, and now Shafali Verma in 2023 for the inaugural season of the WPL.
Delhi Capitals make up for their lackluster start to the WPL auction
With the WPL Auction finally underway, the Delhi Capitals were one of the teams who played their cards very tactically. DC did not bring in any player from the first set but they quickly made up for their slow start by roping in 22-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, and five-time T20 World Cup champion, who has also led the team in four out of their five titles- Meg Lanning.
Rodrigues is going to be one of the most important players for DC in the inaugural season of the WPL. The 22-year-old has been in good form of late and the team will hope that she can reprise her form at the tournament as well.
The captain of the U19 Indian team who won the World Cup in fabulous fashion, Shafali Verma could be integral for the Delhi Capitals. Unfortunately, there were many big players that DC could not bring into their side. Players like Harmanpreet Kaur, Ellyse Perry, and Deepti Sharma were some of the players that DC missed out on as they were outbid.
