Former India captain Virat Kohli has been phenomenal for the Indian team so far in the T20 World Cup 2022. Recently, the 33-year-old surpassed Mahela Jayawardene to become the leading run-scorer in the history of the tournament and also is the leading scorer of the eighth edition of the multi-nation tournament. Now, despite scoring 220 runs in just four matches, the ‘King’ of Indian cricket never looked like playing fancy shots or being a 360-degree player. He backed his natural cricketing shots and got the necessary result and that is something which impressed former Aussie international Ian Chappell.
Now, after India’s narrow victory over Bangladesh, the 79-year-old recalled how Virat once spoke to him about the reason for not playing any modern-day or fancy cricketing shots. Virat in that interview revealed how it may affect his Test cricket and thus, doesn’t prefer to play such shots.
“We did an interview with Virat Kohli, couple of years ago. It was a magnificent example of talking about the game. When we asked Virat about why don't you use some of the fancy shots, he said, 'I don't want them to creep into my Test game'. That's one of the amazing things about Virat Kohli. He makes all these runs at a very good rate, and he does it with normal cricketing shots,” Chappell recalled during a discussion on the Sydney Morning Herald.
“Few alleviate and get hit into the stands, that doesn't mean it's a slog. As Mark (Taylor) described, off the backfoot, hitting straight, it's a cricket shot, except you don't hit it in the air. But he did, and he did 90 metres,” the former Australia skipper added.
Kohli lauds Suryakumar Yadav after the latter rise as number one T20I batter
After a memorable year with the bat, flamboyant batter Suryakumar Yadav has risen up to the ranks and finally become the number one ranked T20I batter in the world. He was just a few points behind Mohammad Rizwan in the ICC ranking but finally, with 164 runs from four matches in the T20 World Cup, the 32-year-old surpassed the Pakistan opener to take the lead.
Virat Kohli was very impressed with his performance and also lauded him in an Instagram comment. While replying to Suryakumar Yadav’s ‘Fire hai comment’, the former India captain wrote, ‘@surya_14kumar bhau sabse upar #1,’ on his post.
