Former England batter Owais Shah admitted that he has been surprised by the amount of runs India's new Test captain Shubman Gill has scored in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. However, he has backed veteran opener KL Rahul to outscore the Punjab batter in the upcoming matches.

Both KL and Shubman have been in remarkable form on the England tour, having slammed runs across the first three Test matches. Gill is leading the charts in the run scorers’ list, having aggregated 607 runs from three matches so far at an average of 101.17. Rahul, on the other hand, has scored 375 runs in three games at an average of 62.50. While Gill failed in both innings of the third Test at Lord's, Rahul has shown tremendous consistency, registering at least one 50-plus score in every match.

Shah said that everyone expected Gill to hog the limelight after Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket, but it has been Rahul who has impressed him most.

"I think he's been in the shadow of Kohli. With Kohli at the crease, he was always going to be your main batsman and Rahul was under the radar. But this is his time to flourish. This is the first series without Virat Kohli. Look at the batting order, yes Shubman Gill has done really well, I wasn't expecting it. I did not think he had it in him to do what he's done so far," Shah remarked on the Beard Before Wicket podcast.

"But I still feel KL Rahul is the best batsman in the batting line-up who you should be able to rely on. And it is time for him to deliver the sort of numbers his technique and temperament promise. I feel KL, over 10-15 matches, may just outscore Shubman Gill. I think we will see him really come about in the next 12 months," Shah added.
