Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir posted a cryptic message about how the truth behind a coach’s so-called unlimited authority eventually becomes clear, in response to a picture shared by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor with the former cricketer. In the post, Tharoor had referred to Gambhir as the man with the second hardest job in the country after the Prime Minister.

Tharoor shared the picture after meeting Gambhir in Nagpur, where the first T20I against New Zealand was held. In that match, India defeated the visitors by 48 runs, riding on Abhishek Sharma’s fiery knock and a collective bowling effort from the Indian attack.

“In Nagpur, enjoyed a good &frank discussion with my old friend @GautamGambhir, the man with the hardest job in India after the PM’s! He is being second-guessed by millions daily but stays calm &walks on undaunted. A word of appreciation for his quiet determination and able leadership. Wishing him all success — starting today! #INDvNZT20,” wrote Tharoor on X.

“Thanks a lot Dr @ShashiTharoor! When the dust settles, truth & logic about a coach’s supposedly “unlimited authority” will become clear. Till then I’m amused at being pitted against my own who are the very best!,” Gambhir replied.

Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach has been marked by several highs and lows. In T20Is, he has enjoyed significant success, guiding India to an Asia Cup triumph and remaining unbeaten in bilateral series so far, which has made the team favourites heading into the T20 World Cup starting on February 7.

In Test cricket, Gambhir has overseen a mixed but respectable run. India secured a 2-2 series draw in England under Shubman Gill’s captaincy and registered home series victories against Bangladesh and the West Indies. However, the team suffered rare setbacks at home, getting whitewashed by New Zealand in 2024 and by South Africa last year.

His record in ODI cricket has been more uneven. While Gambhir led India to an ICC Champions Trophy title with Rohit Sharma at the helm, the team also endured away series losses in Sri Lanka and Australia. More recently, India lost a home ODI series to New Zealand, handing the visitors their first-ever ODI series win on Indian soil.
