India's flamboyant opener Shubman Gill opened up on his struggles in the first three T20Is against the West Indies. Notably, the opener relished a stellar outing against the Windies in the fourth T20I as he slammed 77 runs off 47 balls and raised a vital 165-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal which helped the Men in Blue get on level terms in the series, 2-2.
However, the batter endured a lean patch in the first three T20Is as he compiled single-digit scores of three, seven, and six runs, respectively. Despite this, Gill expressed that he was unable to convert his starts but was confident about his approach in the three matches.
“It's important to go to your basics. You have to identify whether you are making any mistake. I felt I wasn't making a mistake in any of the three matches. But I couldn't convert my starts. T20 format is like that,” Gill told Arshdeep Singh during a post-match chat after the fourth T20I as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“When you have 3-4 matches where a good shot is caught by the fielder, and you have to eye at making quick runs, you don't have time to think much. You just look at what your template was when you were consistently scoring runs,” he added.
Gill laid down a solid foundation during the chase along with Jaiswal as they added 165 for the opening wicket, the joint-highest for India in T20Is to chase down the Windies’ target of 179 runs. The 23-year-old opener cracked five maximums and three fours in his brutal knock of 77 runs at a solid strike rate of 163.82.
It is worth mentioning that Gill enjoyed a magnificent season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as he accumulated 890 runs in 17 matches, lacing it with four fifties and three tons at an average of 59.33.
Meanwhile, team India will look to keep their momentum intact for the fifth and final T20I match so as to clinch the series. The two sides will square off for the series decider at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill on Sunday, August 13.
