Rohit Sharma attended Cheteshwar Pujara's wife's book launch event, where he was asked about his father's reaction to his Test retirement. The former Indian Test skipper confirmed his father to be a huge fan of Test cricket. Sharma remembered an incident where his father was not too excited after he scored 264 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2014.
Rohit claimed that his father used to discuss in detail the useful contributions in Test cricket, despite them not being big scores like the ones he hit in ODIs. Rohit regarded it as peculiar for someone who followed his career closely from the Under-19 days to the highest level.

"I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It's important to go out there and all that. But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s, in Test cricket used to talk to me about it in detail. So that's the kind of love he had for the game. And he's obviously seen you go up the ranks," said Rohit in the event, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
My father has been a fan of Test cricket: Rohit Sharma
The Indian batter claimed that his father worked for a transport company and played a big role, just like his mother, in his becoming a major cricketer. He then claimed that his father is not a fan of limited-overs cricket and prefers to watch Test cricket, confirming his love for the sport.
"My father worked in a transport company. Like I said, what my mom did, my father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that we could have our lives. But my father, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn't like this new-age cricket," added Rohit in the event.
The star cricketer spoke about how his dad felt about his retirement from Tests. The experienced player said his father has watched him play Tests and appreciated the same. He confirmed that his father was a bit disappointed to hear the news of his retirement. However, Rohit said that his father was happy for him to have a good career. Sharma concluded by saying he is grateful for everything his father did for him.
"My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with the red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that's my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible," Rohit concluded.
