India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has showered praise on ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah, referring to him as a “national treasure” following his player of the match performance in the finals, helping India clinch the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a thumping 96 run win over New Zealand.
"Like Sanju said in the last game that he wanted to give his Man-of-the-Match [award] to Boom [Jasprit Bumrah]. Once in a generation bowler, I can call him a national treasure right now. He knows what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, the best in the business, and hopefully he keeps doing that,” said Surya.
The fast-bowler finished the tournament with 14 wickets, the joint most, at an impressive average of 12.42. His economy of 6.21 highlights how difficult it has been for batters to put him away.
His performances in the semifinals and finals were most noteworthy. The 1/33 against England proved the difference as India prevailed by a mere seven runs defending a mammoth 254. Despite Jacob Bethell’s heroics, Bumrah gave just 14 runs in his last two overs, pulling the game back in India’s favour.
His 4/15 in the final broke the New Zealand innings, which saw India clinch their third T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team to successfully defend the trophy and the first host-nation to win the trophy.
Suryakumar also praised Bumrah’s performances and the responsibility that he took as a senior player, along with Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel.
"It's really important to understand what they are capable of, and I knew they had the match-winners in them. The timing was perfect for Sanju to come in. Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek Sharma, the world No. 1 players, we always knew that they had something special, no bigger stage than a final to do something. And also how Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel [performed], they have been in the circuit for a really long time, taking care of each other with all the support staff. I think it was very, very special," he added.
