Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels that Rajasthan Royals' young Indian dasher Yashasvi Jaiswal is ready to represent the Indian team at the top level. The batting great reckoned it is imperative the selectors give a chance to the southpaw, who is at the top of his game in the ongoing edition of the IPL.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in rollicking form in the ongoing 16th edition of the tournament, leading the charge for his side at the top of the order. The southpaw is the third leading runscorer of IPL 2023, with a glittering century to his name in this year's edition.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar lavished praise on the young Indian batting star, highlighting his ability to play long innings in the shortest format of the game. The storied former Indian opener also praised his technical ability, making the youngster a complete batter across all formats of the game.
“If a batter scores 40-50 runs in T20 in 20-25 balls, he has done well for the team. But if he's a opener, you'd want him to play 15 overs. If he scores century by the time, your team total would easily cross 190-200 mark. That's why, the way Yashasvi has batted in this season, it has made me very happy. He's a technical batter as well,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
When a player is in form, and then he gets the chance, his confidence is also sky-rocketed: Gavaskar
Given Jaiswal's red-hot form, Gavaskar urged the selectors to hand the southpaw a maiden Indian call-up. The iconic batter explained it was important to give a batter a chance when they are in form as it helps boost their confidence.
“I think he's ready and should be given a chance. When a player is in form, and then he gets the chance, his confidence is also sky-rocketed. Especially in international debut, there's always doubt, 'Am I ready for international standard?' If your form isn't good at the time, your doubt increases. So, it's important to be in form at that time,” Gavaskar further said.
