Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly feels that if Pat Cummins had won the toss and asked India to bat first on Day 1 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, then India would have been in an excellent position at stumps.

India left out no. 1 ranked Test bowler R Ashwin and decided to bowl first in the World Test Championship Final against Australia. Notably, Australia scored 73/2 at lunch at the Oval on Wednesday. Following the break, India dismissed David Warner for 43, while Usman Khawaja was out for a duck.

At the close of Day 1, Australia continued to be in dominance as Travis Head and Steve Smith kept Australia ticking, posting 327/3 at stumps, adding over 250 runs together after Mohammed Shami knocked out Marnus Labuschagne after lunch.

"Absolutely, if you see when Pat Cummins won the toss, he also said that he would have bowled first. If Pat Cummins had won the toss, India might have been in this situation. It has not happened for the first time that a team scored 300 runs after losing two wickets in the first session," Ganguly told Star Sports.

Steve Smith and Travis Head excelled in their roles: Ganguly

Ganguly also hailed Smith and Head for doing exceptionally well in their roles. "You have to give credit to Steve Smith and Travis Head. Both have played different types of knocks. Smith has played the way you play in swinging and seaming conditions in England. Head has played his own game, that you keep playing positively in all conditions."

With 22 fours and a six, Head smashed an undefeated 146 off 156 deliveries. Smith, on the other hand, hammered 14 fours to score an undefeated 95 off 227 balls at stumps. As they square off in the second World Test Championship Final, Australia and India are vying for the biggest honour in Test cricket.
