Former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth feels Shreyas Iyer should have been in India's T20I mix for the upcoming series against South Africa. The last time Iyer represented the Men in Blue in a T20I was in December 2023.
Although Srikkanth seemed satisfied with the 15-member squad named to take on the Proteas, he opined Iyer deserved a chance, especially after his performance in the Champions Trophy and the Indian Premier League earlier in the year.
"This is a fantastic team. But I still believe Shreyas Iyer should be part of this whole system. Don't forget, he played brilliantly in the IPL and the Champions Trophy. So, Shreyas Iyer should be in the scheme of things. You'll have to give it to that boy with the scores he has put together in white-ball cricket," stated Srikkanth in a video on his YouTube channel.
To conclude, the 65-year-old opined that Iyer was simply unlucky to miss owing to India's bench strength in white-ball cricket.
"Shreyas Iyer should be given a look-in before the T20 World Cup. He's a demolishing batter who can demolish attacks in the middle overs. I feel bad for him, but the Indian team is too strong," he added.
Iyer recently suffered a severe spleen injury while completing a catch in the ODI series against Australia Down Under. He was sidelined after the same and has been recovering ever since of late. It will be interesting to see whether he comes back into the scheme of things for the white-ball series against New Zealand, slated to be held in January next year.

As for India, they will take on the Proteas in a five-match series to conclude their all-format assignment. The 20-over leg is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, December 9. The hosts were whitewashed 0-2 in the Tests but came back in the ODIs, winning the three-match series 2-1.
