Indonesia pacer Gede Priandana etched his name into cricket history by becoming the first bowler to claim five wickets in a single over in an international T20I match. The remarkable feat came during the first T20I against Cambodia in Bali on Tuesday, December 23, making Priandana the first man or woman to achieve this milestone at the international level.

Defending a target of 168, Indonesia were in a strong position, but Cambodia were still in contention at the end of the 15th over, having reached 106 for five. What followed was a dramatic collapse triggered by Priandana’s sensational spell. The right-arm pacer struck with the first three deliveries of the over, dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh, and Chanthoeun Rathanak to complete a stunning hat-trick.

After a dot ball that further tightened the screws, Priandana removed Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak in successive deliveries to complete five wickets in the over. Cambodia managed just one run in the over, a wide conceded between the final two wickets, and were eventually bowled out 60 runs short of the target, handing Indonesia a comprehensive victory.

The 28-year-old also contributed with the bat earlier in the match, scoring six runs off 11 deliveries while opening the innings alongside wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kesuma. Kesuma was the standout performer with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 110 off 68 balls, which included eight fours and six sixes, and laid the foundation for Indonesia’s commanding total.

While this was the first instance of a five-wicket over in international cricket, the feat has occurred twice previously in men’s T20 cricket. Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain achieved it in the Victory Day T20 Cup during the 2013-14 season, while Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun famously took five wickets in an over against Haryana in the semi-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20.

Prior to Priandana’s achievement, there had been 14 instances of bowlers taking four wickets in an over in international T20Is, the most iconic being Sri Lanka legend Lasith Malinga’s four-in-four against New Zealand in 2019.

For Cambodia, Shah Abrar Hussain and Etienne Beukes picked up two wickets each. Priandana was well supported by Danilson Hawoe and Anjar Tadarus, who also claimed two wickets apiece. With this victory, Indonesia have taken a 1-0 lead in the eight-match T20I series, with the second game scheduled to be played at the same venue on December 23.
