The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh witnessed an exciting IPL 2025 Eliminator clash on Friday as the Mumbai Indians (MI) held their nerve to knock out Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs and secure a spot in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings on Sunday, June 1.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, MI got off to a solid start thanks to Rohit Sharma's sublime fifty. Rohit was back to his best, smashing a 50-ball 81 and putting MI in the driver's seat. Johny Bairstow (47), Suryakumar Yadav (33) and Tilak Varma (25) all played a big role in adding valuable runs to the tally. MI's final six overs saw them smash nine sixes, including three by Hardik Pandya in the final over, and finish with a total of 228/5.
Chasing a big target, the Gujarat Titans began brilliantly. Kusal Mendis and B Sai Sudharsan put up a 64-run partnership after losing skipper Shubman Gill in the first over. Mendis had an unfortunate dismissal on his debut, getting out hit-wicket on 20. Sudharsan, however, played a solid hand, notching up a 28-ball fifty and finishing with 80 off 49 balls, crossing 700 runs in the season.
Washington Sundar added 48 off 24 balls and helped GT keep up with the required rate through the middle overs. But in the final stages of the second innings, MI brought on their ace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, and cleaned up Washington Sundar with his trademark yorker.
MI’s impact player Ashwani Kumar troubled the GT batters with his lengths. Needing 45 off the last three overs, GT’s hopes were still alive with power-hitters like Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia at the crease. However, Trent Boult’s 19th over went for only 12 runs, despite one massive six from Shahrukh.
With 24 required off the final six balls. Richard Gleeson, despite a hamstring concern, came on to bowl the final over and sealed the deal with three impressive deliveries, conceding just three runs before Ashwani finished the innings.
