Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni measured his bat with the gauge and got approval from the on-field umpires to bat in the 52nd match of the IPL 2025 between CSK and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The umpire gauged Dhoni's bat initially but it failed the test. Subsequently, the star batter took it upon himself to pass his willow's test. The CSK skipper successfully passed his bat through the gauge though not as cleanly but that was enough to convince the umpire.
In the 17th over of CSK's innings, Lungi Ngidi was on fire, as he dismissed Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis off back-to-back deliveries to bring RCB back into the game. That was when Dhoni entered the middle and underwent the bat test.
As per the rules, the dimensions of an eligible cricket bat are 2.68 inches in total depth, 4.33 inches of width, and 1.61 inches of edges. The curve of a legal bat, as per the gauge, must be within 0.20 inches. Batters like Nitish Rana, Hardik Pandya, and many others have undergone the test in the ongoing season.

When Dhoni came out to bat, CSK needed 42 runs in 21 balls. In his stay in the middle, the CSK skipper managed to score just 12 runs in eight balls.
The star batter was unhappy with his performance. In the post-match talk, the 43-year-old agreed that he should have hit a couple of more shots to ease the pressure. In the process, Dhoni took the blame of CSK's loss on himself and praised Romario Shepherd's knock.
"When I went into bat, with the kind of deliveries and the runs needed, I felt I should've converted a couple more shots to ease the pressure. I take the blame. They got off to a good start, in between we pulled it back, but Romario Shepherd was brilliant. Whatever the bowlers bowled, he was able to get maximum runs," said Dhoni.
