A truly heroic display of batting by Shreyas Iyer (87* off 41) led Punjab Kings to a five-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League at the Narendra Modi Stadium. It will be a repeat of Qualifier 1 as far as the summit clash on June 3 is concerned.

PBKS tracked down 204 with an over to spare, with the skipper leading from the front. His fiery knock comprised five fours and eight sixes, including three on the trot off Reece Topley's third over and four off Ashwani Kumar's final over. Iyer quite deservedly won the Player of the Match accolade for his out-worldly display.

Talking Points

1.  Suryakumar pulls off yet another 25-plus score this season

This was Suryakumar's 16th consecutive 25-plus score in IPL 2025. In the 16 innings he has played this season, he has managed to go past 25 in each instance. This is quite a remarkable feat in itself. Robin Uthappa's 10 times in 2014 is the closest anyone has come.

2. Dhir’s death-over carnage continues

Dhir has arguably been the most lethal death-overs batter as far as strike rate and boundary scoring ability is concerned. All of his seven boundaries came between over 16-20. He has scored a total of 173 runs in this phase at a belligerent strike rate of 205.95.

3. Bumrah encounters an uncharacteristic wicketless, expensive outing

Not only did Jasprit Bumrah not take a wicket during his four-over spell, he also conceded 40 runs. He was at the receiving end of a proper bashing from Inglis in his first over, which ended up going for 20 runs itself. MI's pace kingpin failed to secure even a single breakthrough.

4. Records smashed in epic run-chase

PBKS' 204-run-chase became the highest ever in an IPL knockout game. It was also the first time a side pulled off a 200-plus chase against MI. If that wasn't enough, it was the eighth time PBKS chased 200-plus in the IPL; the most by a team in the marquee T20 tournament.

Who Said What?

Hardik Pandya (losing captain)

The way Shreyas batted, took his chances and some of the shots he played were really outstanding. I think they definitely batted really well. I think it was par, but it needed some great execution as a bowling unit which I think in these big games it really matters. And as I mentioned they were really calm, put us under pressure and I think we were not able to execute the way we wanted. I will not put it on the wicket. If we had to do something better it was maybe someone bowling right lengths or maybe the right bowler at the right point, the result could have been a bit different. In hindsight, it would have been different (whether he should have bowled Bumrah with 41 needed of 4 overs) and it would have been too early as well, Boom knowing the situation if even 18 balls are left Jassi can be Jassi and he can do something special and it just didn't happen today.

Shreyas Iyer (winning captain and Player of the Match)

(On being calm while batting) I don't know to be honest, I love such big occasions. I always say to myself and to my colleagues in the team that the bigger the occasion, the calmer you are, you get the big results. Today was a right example where I was focusing more on my breathing rather than sweating out there. (On chasing a 200+ target) All players need to be assertive and show that intent from ball one. The intent was stupendous and even for me, I had to take some time. From the other end, the batsmen were striking pretty well. I know the more time I spend on the field, the better I get and my vision also gets better. (After the loss against RCB) Just throw the imagination and also the hiccup in the bin and not think too much about where we went wrong because throughout the season we've been playing amazing. The intent and the positivity was imperative from the first game. One match can't define us as a team. (Conversations with uncapped players) I just let them be, I don't ask too much of them, I love the fearless nature they are bringing to the table and also the ideas they share. They would have a fair set of ideas even though they don't have too much experience. They've got the brave nature. I'm very comfortable with the management and everyone around me have made me feel very comfortable. The environment is always positive. I'm just staying in the moment right, I want to cherish this. The job is only half done.
