After winning three out of their first four matches in the ongoing IPL 2023, Rajasthan Royals were considered to be one of the strongest teams in the competition. However, in the next ten matches, the Sanju Samson-led side managed to win only four games as they are currently fifth on the IPL points table. In order to qualify for the playoffs, they need a lot of equations to fall in their favour, which includes Mumbai Indians losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Wankhede Stadium and Gujarat Titans beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by more than five runs.
Meanwhile, talking about their performance so far in the competition, the skipper pointed out that he is shocked to see where RR currently are on the points table. The 2008 champions were considered to be one of the favourites to win the competition this time around but unfortunately, their race to the playoffs got complicated and now it depends on how others perform in the league.
“We have a quality team and it is a little shocking to see where we stand on the table,” Sanju Samson said in the post-match presentation.
RR beat PBKS by four wickets in their final league game
In their final league game of the season, Rajasthan Royals managed to beat Punjab Kings by four wickets in order to keep their hopes alive for the playoffs. Notably, if the team would have won the match within 18.3 overs, then they would have ended up having a better NRR than RCB and could have moved up to fourth on the points table but that unfortunately didn’t happen.
Talking about the same, Samson stated that when Shimron Hetmyer was batting in the middle, he expected the West Indies international to get the job done but that didn’t happen as well. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old briefly talked about Trent Boult after the match for having the ability to pick up a wicket in the first over of the innings.
“I think at the end of the game, when Hety (Hetmyer) was going strong we thought we will finish by 18.5. Almost 90 percent of the times we feel Boult will take a wicket in the first over. We were under pressure in the last few games,” Samson added.
