Veteran Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson has announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing a distinguished career to an end that spanned international cricket, domestic competitions, and T20 leagues around the world.

Richardson, 34, confirmed his decision in a heartfelt message on social media, saying he felt it was the right time to step away after giving his all to the sport he loves. The announcement comes after the conclusion of his most recent Big Bash League season with Sydney Sixers, where he featured in two matches, where his side lost in the finals.

"I would like to announce my retirement from professional cricket at the conclusion of this BBL. From making my debut back in 2009 until now, I feel like I have squeezed every drop out of myself and it is the right time to finish such an enjoyable part of my life,” he said.

"I would like to thank all the coaches, administrators, and fellow players who have shaped my career, particularly those from my early days in South Australia and the Northern Territory,” Richardson said in his retirement statement, reflecting on a long and rewarding journey in the game.

He also reflected upon what it meant for him to represent Australia in international cricket, while thanking all the teams he represented.

"I've been fortunate enough to represent my country, along with many franchise teams around the world, and in Australia. I have never taken the opportunity lightly and I hope the people watching knew that I had dreamt about being a cricketer since I was a kid in Darwin," he added.

Richardson was one of the first players in the Big Bash League, debuting in the competition’s very first season. Playing in fifteen seasons of the marquee T20 tournament, he finished as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in men’s history, claiming 142 scalps at an average of 23.21 and an economy rate of 7.87, a testament to his consistency and longevity in the T20 format.

In the BBL, he enjoyed successful stints with the Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Sixers. He has won the title once during his stint with the Renegades in 2019. On the international stage, Richardson represented Australia in 25 ODIs and 36 T20Is, featuring in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning campaign in the UAE and in the subsequent edition as well.
