New Zealand head coach Rob Walter has confirmed that legendary batter and former skipper Kane Williamson is still willing to play international cricket, despite opting out of the forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe and declining a central contract for the 2025 season.

Williamson had signed a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) last year, which allowed him to compete in franchise T20 leagues around the world as well as representing the Black Caps in significant assignments. Last month, he turned down a full-time contract for the second straight year. He also opted out of New Zealand's upcoming two-match Test tour of Zimbabwe, starting later this month.

However, Walter said that he had a lengthy conversation with Williamson regarding his future plans for his international career. The 49-year-old, who recently replaced Gary Stead as New Zealand's head coach, said that Williamson will return to the New Zealand setup soon.

"Myself and Kane have had a nice conversation, a long conversation. It was really great to catch up with him and discuss cricket. It was great to get his view on New Zealand cricket and the Black Caps. He's been so influential in their success over the years. But then also to discuss what the future might look like," Walter told the New Zealand Herald.

"I've said it repeatedly, he's still very committed to the Black Caps and wants to play international cricket. I don't think it'll be too long until we see that," he added.

In 2024, Williamson played nine out of the 13 Tests played by the Kiwis and scored 1013 runs at a staggering average of 59.58. He also played in the Champions Trophy earlier this year and finished with 200 runs from five innings at an average of 40, scoring a match-winning century against South Africa in the semi-final.

Williamson decided to opt out of the Zimbabwe tour as he is set to lead London Spirit in the upcoming edition of the Hundred in England. The 34-year-old could return to international cricket during the three-match T20I series against Australia in October.
