Three Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) supporters were detained by Karnataka Police on Tuesday for reportedly offering a goat as a sacrifice in front of a cutout of Virat Kohli in Mariyammanahalli hamlet of Molakalmuru taluk, Chitradurga district.
The three people who were arrested are Mariyammanahalli residents Sanna Palayya (age 22), Jayanna (age 23), and Tippe Swamy (age 28).
Following RCB's exciting victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, a video of the ritual went viral on social media, sparking police intervention and bringing attention to the event.
One of the men can be seen holding a goat in front of Kohli's cutout in the 20-second footage. The animal is killed with a knife, and its blood is offered as raktaabhisheka (blood offering) to the cutout and a poster of Kohli while another declares RCB's triumph over Chennai Super Kings (CSK). A third individual can be seen using a rope to restrain the goat.
A person going by the moniker "call-me-143-kalki," shared the video on Instagram, sparking online fury.
In response to public uproar, Molakalmuru police filed a complaint and detained the three for animal cruelty under the appropriate laws. One of the most well-liked IPL teams, RCB, has a devoted fan base in Karnataka and beyond.
The squad's recent run of wins, including a pivotal victory over CSK at Chinnaswamy Stadium, has rekindled fans' expectations that their side would win the IPL crown this year, even if they haven't done it in 18 seasons.
After RCB's home victory over CSK, the celebrations grew more intense, and supporters are now looking forward to the next games. The event has been denounced by authorities, who describe it as a troubling instance of intense and misplaced fandom.
