Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mayank Yadav is set to travel to New Zealand to consult with medical specialists after his return to action in IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) was short-lived, as a recurring back injury forced him out of the tournament. Notably, he is expected to follow the same path taken by India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah in 2022.
Bumrah, who was consulted and operated on by specialists in New Zealand. Even during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, the veteran pacer got injured during the last Test match in Sydney, with his reports sent to the same specialists in New Zealand.
Mayank Yadav’s career has been affected by injuries from the start. After being picked up by LSG in the 2022 IPL auction, he missed that season and the next due to fitness concerns. In IPL 2024, he finally got to show his talent, bowling at extreme pace and making a dream debut against Punjab Kings in Lucknow, picking a match-winning spell of 3 for 27 from his four overs.
In the following game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he again picked a three-wicket haul, making him the first player in the history of IPL to win two Player-of-the-Match awards in his first two matches. Unfortunately, that season too was cut short by a side strain after only four games. Despite this, his performance earned him a place in the Indian Team.

Ahead of IPL 2025, Mayank was one of the important players retained by LSG. However, after missing much of the 2024-25 domestic season due to a back injury and returning to IPL 2025 in mid-season, his fitness was closely monitored. He featured in two matches, against Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, picking up two wickets but averaging 50.
Meanwhile, LSG mentor Zaheer Khan mentioned that they were following a strict routine in consultation with the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru to make sure the pacer remains fit. Unfortunately, Mayank’s body takes up the load. After just two matches, he was ruled out of the IPL with another back injury.
