The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) hosted a grand event on May 16 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium to inaugurate three stands named after Indian cricketing greats and administrators. The event marked elaborate decorations and a celebration atmosphere.
The event was originally scheduled for May 13 but had to be postponed due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. Alongside the unveiling of the stands, the event will also include the dedication of the MCA office lounge in memory of the association’s late president, Amol Kale. The decision to name the stands was made during MCA’s 86th Annual General Meeting held on April 15.
The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will be named as the Rohit Sharma Stand, in honor of India’s current ODI captain and his brilliant leadership in the 2024 T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The stand stood adorned with flower decorations and banners showcasing Rohit in his Test jersey. The official name plate was hidden under a cloth, and was revealed in a ceremonial manner.

The Grand Stand Level 4 will be named as the Ajit Wadekar Stand, for the former Indian captain who played an important role in Indian cricket during the 1970s. The Grand Stand Level 3 will be named the Pawar Stand, in recognition of Sharad Pawar’s contributions as the former chief of the ICC, BCCI, and MCA.
Indian veteran cricketer Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 Internationals after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. More recently, he also announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7 ahead of the upcoming tour of England.
Speaking of Ajit Wadekar, he made history by leading India to its first-ever series victories in both the West Indies and England in 1971, which was a landmark achievement that helped redefine the legacy of Indian cricket. The legendary cricketer passed away in August 2018 at the age of 77.
Sharad Pawar is regarded as a guiding force for the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), who served as its president from 2001 to 2016. During his tenure, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium hosted the final of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.
