India’s new ball pair Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj made Sri Lanka relive the horrors of the Asia Cup 2023 final during their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 clash on Thursday, November 02 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, India posted a mammoth total of 357/8 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, speedster Jasprit Bumrah got the team off to a sensational start as he got the wicket off the very first ball of the innings by trapping Pathum Nissanka in front of the stumps.

Mohammed Siraj also joined the party at the other end by dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne lbw and further got Sadeera Samarawickrama caught at slip in the same over. The right-arm seamer further piled on the agony as he cleaned up captain Kusal Mendis (1 off 10) in the very next over to leave Sri Lanka in all sorts of trouble at 3/4 after 3.1 overs.

After the four early strikes, captain Rohit Sharma brought Mohammed Shami into the attack and the right-arm seamer didn’t disappoint as he ran through the Sri Lankan batting order. Shami further picked up four more scalps as to pile on the misery for Sri Lanka as they were left reeling at 29/8 in 13.1 overs. Sri Lanka were finally bundled out for just 55 in 19.4 overs Mohammed Shami scalped his fourth five-wicket haul of his career and finished with figures of 5/18 in five overs.

Shami also became the leading wicket-taker for India in ODI World Cup history with 45 wickets to his name from just 14 matches and surpassed Zaheer Khan’s tally of 44 wickets. The 33-year-old has a mind-boggling average of 12.91 and an economy of 4.91 in his World Cup career.

In the ongoing edition, he has scalped 14 wickets from three matches at an average of 6.71 and an economy of 4.27. Shami was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for his fifer against Sri Lanka as he helped India qualify for the semi-final of the tournament.
