Star India batter Shreyas Iyer hit the longest six of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 during Match 33 of the tournament between India and Sri Lanka on Thursday, November 02 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The 28-year-old walked in to bat at number following the dismissal of Shubman Gill in the 30th over. Iyer wasted no time to settle and took on the bowlers right from the word go.

He even smacked the longest six of the tournament so far on the fourth ball of the 36th over bowled by Kasun Rajitha. The right-handed batter stood tall on a widish delivery and whacked it down the ground launching the ball for a whopping 106 metres. He left behind Australia’s Glenn Maxwell on the list who had clobbered a 104-metre six against New Zealand in Dharamsala.

Notably, Iyer earlier also smacked a 101-metre six against Afghanistan in Delhi to register the-then longest six of the tournament. The 28-year-old went on to score his second half-century of the tournament off just 36 balls coming in to bat under pressure due to his low scores in the last few fixtures. He played a brilliant knock of 82 (56) with the help of three fours and six sixes in his innings.

India posted 357/8 in the first innings

Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, India lost their captain Rohit Sharma on just the second ball of the over who lost his stumps against Dilshan Madushanka. Following his dismissal, Shubman Gill (92 off 92) and Virat Kohli (88 off 94) stabilized the innings with their massive 189-run stand for the second wicket.

Courtesy of their efforts, India posted a massive score of 357/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Dilshan Madushanka was the pick of the bowlers for his side as he scalped 5/80 in ten overs.
