India and Sri Lanka are locking horns in Match 33 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday, November 02 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, India lost their captain Rohit Sharma on just the second ball of the innings as he lost his stumps against Dilshan Madushanka. Following his dismissal, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli stabilized the innings with their massive 189-run stand for the second wicket.
Gill played a brilliant innings of 92 (92) with the help of 11 fours and two sixes leaving the crowd at Wankhede mesmerized by his strokeplay. One of his shots, even left Virat Kohli stunned as he came down the track to smack Dilshan Madushanka through covers for a four. Seeing Gill’s audacity to charge at the Sri Lankan seamer, Virat Kohli was left awestruck which was evident with his reaction after the ball reached the fence.

The 24-year-old failed to score his seventh ODI hundred as he upper cut a bouncer from Dilshan Madushanka straight into the gloves of Kusal Mendis. Misfortune even followed Kohli at the other end who fell short of scoring his 49th ODI hundred by just 12 runs. He also lost his wicket against Madushanka as he played a slower ball in the air to Pathum Nissanka at short cover.
Iyer and Jadeja propelled India's total to 357/8
As a result, Kohli departed for 88 (94) smashing 11 fours in his innings. He failed to level Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI hundreds (49) and will be eager to achieve the landmark in the next game against South Africa on his birthday on November 05.

After Gill and Kohli’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer led the charge for India with his quick-fire knock of 82 (56) smashing three fours and six sixes. Ravindra Jadeja also played a cameo of 35 (24) in the end to help India reach 357/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Madushanka was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as he registered figures of 5/80 in ten overs.
