The chairman of the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) Mohsin Naqvi, is mulling over appointing former captain Waqar Younis as the director of cricket affairs. According to a reliable source, Naqvi has taken a hint from other boards and wants a former player to handle all cricket-related affairs.
The source informed us that Waqar Younis is being looked at as one of the best candidates, and he is expected to be given full responsibility for looking after men’s cricket.
“Waqar Younis is a top candidate to be handed over complete responsibility for looking after men’s cricket, including liaising with the two foreign head coaches, national selectors, and domestic cricket departments,” the source was quoted as saying by Outlook.
“Naqvi doesn’t want to centralise all powers, as he wants to decentralise things, especially where cricket issues are concerned. In the future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be looked over by the director of cricket,” he added.
The source also stated that the PCB chairman is currently fully focusing on the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 which is set to be hosted by Pakistan, alongside other matters relating to the board. It is worth noting that there is tension in the PCB currently due to the Indian team’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the tournament.
“Being the federal interior minister, Naqvi believes that it is only fair that all cricket matters are handled by specialists and not only people in administration,” the source stated.
Furthermore, it has been reported that the director of cricket would have powers to appoint other former players for assistance. Waqar Younis has previously served the PCB as head coach as well as bowling coach. If he makes his return to the board, he will hope to make an even greater impact for the development of Pakistan Cricket. For the time being, however, it is yet to be known what decision Mohsin Naqvi ends up making.
