Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, has said that Prithvi Shaw spoiled his cricketing career by stepping towards the wrong path.
Shaw became a household name after scoring a century on his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of just 17 in the 2016-17 season. He also led India to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2018 before earning a spot in the senior national team. The Thane-born smashed a century on his Test debut in 2018, but he lost his spot soon after and hasn't played international cricket since 2021.
Shaw has been going through a very difficult phase in his career, as he has had to leave Mumbai ahead of the upcoming domestic season after being dropped midway through the previous edition of the Ranji Trophy due to poor form and disciplinary issues. While he did play a few games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shaw was left out of the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The 25-year-old also went unsold in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction after being released by Delhi Capitals (DC).
Lad recalled how Shaw came to prominence by mesmerising the cricket fraternity with his surreal talent. However, he rued that the youngster went astray from his path and ended up spoiling his game.
“I have seen Prithvi since his childhood, from the time he was 10 years old. He was a highly talented player. But as I have said, everyone’s journey is individual, and I don’t know what exactly happened with him. Still, Prithvi Shaw was a very talented cricketer. Unfortunately, he went down the wrong path and ended up spoiling his cricket," Lad said on a podcast with Gaurav Mangalani.
Furthermore, Lad compared Shaw with the latest batting prodigies like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, calling them the future of Indian cricket.
“Even now, I feel there should be a batter like him, the way he used to bat. Although right now we have some truly outstanding batters. For example, the way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is batting, and the way Ayush Mhatre is batting. These are future cricketers in the making. They are getting ready in line. Indian cricket is almost at the top,” he added.

Shaw will look to resurrect his career this season after shifting base to Maharashtra. The right-handed batter had requested a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association in June, and it was subsequently approved.
