Rassie van der Dussen has been provided the baton to lead a newish South African T20I side for the upcoming Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series 2025, with New Zealand the third team alongside the Proteas and hosts Zimbabwe. The Proteas are without full-time captain Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj.

Barring Maharaj, who will be leading the Test squad, all others mentioned above have been rested by Cricket South Africa. Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi, neither of whom are contracted to CSA, have not been included as part of the 15-member squad while Heinrich Klaasen has recently retired from international cricket.

Van der Dussen has previously captained South Africa in three T20Is and an ODI. However, he is yet to win a match while leading the Proteas. It is also the inaugural white-ball assignment for South Africa's all-format coach, Shukri Conrad. The 58-year-old, who was already in charge of the red-ball unit, has been roped in to handle all three formats for the nation until 2027.

Meanwhile, Gerald Coetzee and Nandre Burger will be slated to make their return to international cricket after eight and 11 months, respectively. A hamstring injury had ruled Coetzee out of action, while he later suffered a groin injury in the home summer to extend his stay on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Burger was out with a lower back stress fracture. Both of the pacers are currently in action at Major League Cricket 2025.

Promising left-handed top-order batter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who is also listed in the Test squad, will be in line for a T20I debut alongside Rubin Hermann. Dewald Brevis, who had a remarkable stint as an injury replacement for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025,  will also be one to look out for.

South Africa's T20I squad for Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series 2025:
Rassie van der Dussen (c), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Reeza Hendricks, Rubin Hermann, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Andile Simelane
