RCB to install AI cameras at Chinnaswamy Stadium ahead to ensure smooth crowd management

Royal Challengers Bengaluru has proposed the installation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for improving fan safety and crowd management. In a formal communication to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), the IPL franchise displayed a comprehensive surveillance plan for preventing crowd-related incidents and bringing confidence in the venue ahead of future cricket events.
The proposal comes in the aftermath of the tragic stampede on June 4 during RCB’s IPL 2025 title celebrations, which resulted in the deaths of 11 fans and injuries to several others. Following the incident, the stadium was deemed unsafe for large gatherings by a government-appointed commission, leading to the suspension of cricket at the venue. Chinnaswamy Stadium subsequently lost matches scheduled for the 2025 Women’s World Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup, while police also denied permission to host Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. Despite RCB’s home venue being moved out for IPL 2026, the franchise has proposed a technology-driven solution to address safety concerns.

RCB has proposed the installation of 300 to 350 AI-enabled cameras across the stadium, designed to help KSCA and law enforcement agencies in crowd monitoring. According to the franchise, the system will assist in efficient management of crowd movement, enforce disciplined queueing, track entries and exits, and prevent unauthorised access. The technology is expected to reduce risks during high-attendance matches and improve overall fan safety.
The franchise has promised to bear the entire one-time cost of approximately INR 4.5 crore, showing its willingness to invest in long-term safety infrastructure. The initiative is part of RCB CARES, a programme launched in reply to the June tragedy.

To implement the project, RCB has partnered with Gurugram-based Staqu, a technology company known for its work in public safety and automation. Staqu’s solutions include advanced facial recognition technology and intelligent monitoring of crowds, objects, perimeters, and vehicles. These systems have previously helped several state police forces in surveillance and investigations.
It is worth noting that the AI platform leverages real-time video analytics and data-driven intelligence, which is set to detect early signs of incidents such as violence, intrusion, or unauthorised access. This will lead to quicker intervention and a more effective law enforcement response.
