Indian Test captain Shubman Gill seems to be in action mode following a humiliating series defeat against South Africa. The Indian team suffered yet another home series defeat at the hands of the current World Test Champions South Africa in November 2025, as the Proteas whitewashed the hosts 2-0 in the two-match series.

Now, India’s test captain is ready to amend mistakes and has suggested some changes that might help plan better in Test Cricket after the 2-0 whitewash against the Proteas. Coincidentally, this was India’s second home series whitewash within one year, after suffering a 3-0 defeat against New Zealand in late 2024.

Shubman Gill has proposed having 15-day camps before every Test series India plays, as it might help players and the team management prepare better for the rigours of the five-day format. According to The Times of India, even the BCCI is willing to give the captain more authority in planning and preparation of Test cricket and is ready to fulfil the captain’s recommended course of action.

“Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before going into a Test series. There was an issue with the itinerary this season where the team didn’t have much time to prepare. Gill recommended to the Board that it would be ideal if there were 15-day red-ball camps before a Test series”, a BCCI source was quoted as saying.

It is worth noting that the Indian team only got four days to prepare before the series against the Proteas, as they had come into the series right after the end of the white-ball assignment Down Under against the Australian side.

“Gill is showing assertive qualities now. He is presenting his vision to the selectors and BCCI with a lot more clarity. It augurs well for Indian cricket as there is a need for a strong captain after Rohit Sharma. The Test and ODI teams are Gill’s. It is important for him to have a bigger say,” the source added.

Gautam Gambhir agrees with the captain

The right-hand batter took up captaincy as the Indian team entered a transitional phase following the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. In his debut series as captain, Gill had a stellar tour of England as India drew 2-2, while amassing 754 runs. Under the Fazilka-born's captaincy, the hosts crushed the West Indies 2-0 at home before, but lost to the WTC champions.

Coincidentally, India coach Gautam Gambhir, too, had similar words to say in a post-series press conference. He had stated that the preparations and planning could be better, and scheduling does make a difference. India won’t be playing another Test match until July this year. The team will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match series and will try to get back to winning ways in the longest format.
