Reports: Shubman Gill unlikely to bat in warm-up tie, on track for Galle Test vs Sri Lanka

Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice session on Thursday, August 6. According to reports corroborated by multiple outlets, his finger was struck on two separate occasions during that session: first while batting in the nets against Gurnoor Brar, and then again during slip fielding practice. KL Rahul stepped in to captain India on Day 1 of the three-day warm-up match at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo, with Rishabh Pant keeping wicket.

India are scheduled to travel to Galle on August 11 once the warm-up fixture concludes, giving Gill several days to recover before the first Test gets underway.

As per a report from Times of India, the Punjab cricketer will not be batting in the ongoing solitary warm-up fixture.

How serious is Gill's finger injury and when is he expected to return?

The BCCI has confirmed they are monitoring Gill's progress but has not disclosed the exact severity of the injury or a detailed medical assessment timeline. The decision to keep him out of the warm-up match is aimed at giving his finger adequate rest ahead of the Galle Test. Gill is expected to be fit and available to lead India when the first Test begins on August 15, 2026.

The second Test of the two-match series is scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23, 2026. The gap between the two Tests gives the team management additional flexibility to manage Gill's workload during the series if required.

Rahul is leading the side in the warm-up game in Gill's absence, while former vice-captain Pant is keeping wicket behind the stumps. After Sri Lanka declared at 363/8, India lost openers Yashasvi Jaiswal for 0 and Rahul for 40. Devdutt Padikkal, however, has scored a fluent half-century, batting at No. 3.
