Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has examined Test match records across SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) to compare the careers of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. The comparison reveals significant differences in how the two batters performed in these challenging overseas conditions.
Chopra highlighted the aggregate statistics across all four SENA nations. In 63 Test matches across SENA countries, Sachin Tendulkar accumulated 5,387 runs at an average of 51.30, with 17 centuries and 23 half-centuries. Virat Kohli, in 48 Test matches across the same countries, scored 3,781 runs at an average of 41.54, with 12 centuries.
"SENA countries will tell you your true capability. Overall, in SENA countries, 63 matches for Sachin paaji, his average is 51.30, has 17 centuries and 23 half-centuries, and he has 5,387 runs. Virat Kohli - 48 matches, 3,781 runs at an average of 41.54. We shouldn't look at the centuries because Paaji has 63 matches, and Virat has also scored 12 in 48 matches, but there is a significant difference in the average," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
AB de Villiers: Kohli better than Sachin in Tests
South Africa: Kohli edges ahead
In South Africa, Tendulkar played 15 matches and scored 1,161 runs at an average of 46.44, with 5 centuries. Kohli's record in South Africa showed an average of 49.50 across 9 matches, with 2 centuries and 4 half-centuries. Chopra noted that South Africa presented difficult batting conditions where averages typically declined, yet Kohli marginally outperformed Tendulkar in this particular nation.
"South Africa - difficult conditions to bat. Everyone's average falls there. Paaji's has also fallen. He has an average of only 46.44 there," Chopra said.
"He has five centuries to his name in 15 matches and 1,161 runs. Virat Kohli steals the march in South Africa. He has an average of 49.50 - the only place where he is averaging more than Sachin paaji. He has played nine matches and has two centuries and four half-centuries," he added.
England: Tendulkar's dominance
England presented a stark contrast between the two batsmen. Tendulkar played 17 matches across 30 innings and scored 1,575 runs at an average of 54.31, including 4 centuries. Kohli also played 17 matches but across 33 innings, scoring 1,096 runs at an average of 33.21. The 21-run difference in average highlighted Kohli's struggles in English conditions compared to Tendulkar's consistent performance.
"Sachin paaji has played 17 matches in England, 30 innings, and scored 1,575 runs at an average of 54.31, which includes four centuries. Virat Kohli has also played 17 matches, 33 innings, and has scored 1,096 runs. His average is only 33.21. 54 to 33 - there is a difference of more than 20," Chopra said.
"The one bad tour has probably brought the numbers way down. So Virat Kohli's England numbers are not stacking up. If we compare to Paaji, they are nowhere close," he added.
New Zealand: Limited opportunities for Kohli
In New Zealand, Tendulkar played 11 matches and maintained an average of 49.52, with 2 centuries and 5 half-centuries. Kohli's New Zealand record comprised 4 matches at an average of 36.00, with 1 century. The limited sample size for Kohli in New Zealand made direct comparison difficult, but Tendulkar's average remained substantially higher.
"Sachin paaji played only 11 matches in New Zealand, and there too he has an average of 49.52. An average of nearly 50 in New Zealand - difficult conditions. He has two centuries and five half-centuries. Virat Kohli has played only four matches. He has an average of 36.00 there. Virat has scored one hundred," said Chopra.
Australia showed both battters performing at high levels, though with a notable difference. Tendulkar played 20 matches across 38 innings, scoring 1,809 runs at an average of 53.20, with 6 centuries. Kohli played 18 matches across 34 innings, scoring 1,542 runs at an average of 46.72, with 7 centuries. Despite Kohli's additional century, Tendulkar's average remained 7 runs higher.
"Sachin paaji has played 20 matches in Australia, 38 innings, and has scored 1,809 runs at an average of 53.20. He has six centuries. Virat Kohli has played 18 matches, 34 innings, and has scored 1,542 runs at an average of 46.72," Chopra said.
"He has seven centuries. So he has struck one extra century for sure, but he has an average of 46, and Sachin paaji had an average of 53. There is still a difference of seven runs," he added.
