The multi-format series between the West Indies and India kicked off with the opening Test in Dominica. It is worth noting that both sides will compete in two Test matches before facing off in the white-ball series. With the first Test underway from July 12 onwards, the Windies opted to bat first after winning the toss.
Aiming to notch up a big score on the board in the first innings, the host's plans were derailed after India put in a magnificent performance with the ball. Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul was sent packing by Ravichandran Ashwin for just 12 runs quite early into their innings, and none of the remaining batters except Alick Athanaze could make an impact on the game.
The West Indies were bundled out for just 150 runs in the first innings, and many fans and pundits have come forward to scrutinise the batting performance of the Windies on Day 1 of the Test match, including former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta.
The 46-year-old opined that the West Indies’ showing with the bat was simply ordinary, and their lack of consistency has led to their woes in recent years. He also stated that the shot selection was horrid as well.
"Some of the other batting was ordinary. And I will be forgiving if I say ordinary because there wasn't quite much there. It was quite disheartening to see the approach. They're all good players because they have scored runs in the past. But consistency is something that's lacking and bothering them. Some of the shots that were played were average, or even below average to be honest," Deep Dasgupta told ESPNcricinfo.
India in driver's seat at the close of play on Day 1
After bundling the West Indies out for a mere 150 runs in the first innings, Team India came out to bat and got off to a positive start to the game. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal made his international debut and looked in complete control.
He was accompanied by skipper Rohit Sharma, who was hitting his shots as well. By the time stumps were called on Day 1, India were 80 for no loss, with Jaiswal batting at 40* runs and Rohit unbeaten on 30.
