Former English cricketer Samit Patel weighed in on his cricketing future after representing Derbyshire for one final time in their final group-stage game at the 2025 edition of the T20 Blast. He was in the final months of his contract. However, he will be leaving prior to the start of the One-Day Cup.

While he provided an ambiguous response to his future as far as domestic cricket is concerned, Samit seemed quite excited for a potential role in the coaching domain later down the line.

"Who knows? It could be my last game ever in domestic cricket, it may not be. I've given it a whole crack for two years and it's been pretty disappointing that we've not got to a quarter-final or Finals Day. Hopefully, things don't just stop there, hopefully I can do a role at the club going forward in white-ball cricket. The knowledge I have, I've played over 430 (426) T20s, I've got a lot to give especially with the younger guys in the squad," shared Samit on BBC Radio Derby, as quoted by BBC.

Speaking of Samit's career within the English domestic cricketing system, he spent 22 of his 24 years with Nottinghamshire before transitioning to Derbyshire. He has racked up 6891 runs and picked up 364 wickets in the 426 T20s so far. The all-rounder has also been more than a handy fielder, snapping up 118 catches in his 20-over career.

Samit has never played in the red-ball unit of Derbyshire in the County Championship. His last appearance came in September 2020. The club has repeatedly fallen short of getting past the group-stage throughout his white-ball appearances for Derbyshire.
