India produced a brilliant all-round performance to defeat New Zealand by 96 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, sealing their third T20 World Cup title dominantly. India outplayed New Zealand in every department to successfully defend the title they won in 2024.
After New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to field, India’s batters came out with clear intent. The opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma launched an explosive assault that immediately put New Zealand on the back foot. Samson began steadily but soon found his rhythm, while Abhishek took the attack to the bowlers from the outset. The young left-hander smashed the fastest half-century of the tournament, reaching his fifty in just 18 balls. His 52 off 21 balls included six fours and three sixes and helped India race to a staggering 92/0 in the powerplay, the highest powerplay total of the tournament.

Although Abhishek fell soon after the powerplay, Samson continued to anchor the innings with authority. He mixed elegance with power, dispatching the New Zealand bowlers to all parts of the ground. Ishan Kishan joined the party and maintained the momentum with an aggressive approach. The duo added a rapid century partnership that pushed India well past the 200-run mark. Kishan struck 54 off just 25 balls, while Samson played a magnificent knock of 89 off 46 deliveries, decorated with five fours and eight sixes.
New Zealand briefly found hope when James Neesham struck three wickets in a single over, removing Samson, Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession. However, by then India had already built a massive platform. In the death overs, Shivam Dube provided the finishing touch with a fiery cameo of 26 off just eight balls, powering India to a 255/5, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.
Chasing an enormous target of 256, Axar Patel struck early to dismiss Finn Allen, while Jasprit Bumrah removed the dangerous Rachin Ravindra soon after. New Zealand tried to stay alive in the contest through Tim Seifert, who counterattacked brilliantly with a quickfire 52 off 26 balls. However, wickets kept falling at the other end as India’s bowlers applied relentless pressure.
Heated moment erupts between Arshdeep and Daryl Mitchell
Axar delivered a crucial spell in the middle overs, picking up three key wickets, including Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell. Hardik Pandya also chipped in with an important breakthrough to remove Mark Chapman, further derailing New Zealand’s chase.
From there, Bumrah took complete control of the game. The star pacer produced a masterclass in death bowling, dismantling the New Zealand lower order with his trademark slower yorkers. He finished with outstanding figures of 4/15, recording the best bowling performance by a fast bowler in a T20 World Cup final.
India's T20 WC final score goes beyond final of ODI WC 2023
Mitchell Santner fought hard with a 43-run knock, but the target proved far too steep. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, handing India a massive 96-run victory.
With this triumph, India created history by becoming the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles and the first side to successfully defend the trophy. It was a night where India’s fearless batting, disciplined bowling, and big-match temperament combined perfectly, confirming their status as the most dominant T20 team in the world.

Like I said from day one. In order the win the @ICC WT20 you have to beat India in a knockout match. No team did that. Congrats to @BCCI on their 3rd WT20 title. Hard luck to the @BLACKCAPS (Very Consistent Team)
